This book explores the memory and representation of genocide as they affect individuals, communities and families, and artistic representations. It brings together a variety of disciplines from public health to philosophy, anthropology to architecture, offering readers interdisciplinary and international insights into one of the most important challenges in the 21st century. The book begins by describing the definitions and concepts of genocide from historical and philosophical perspectives. Next, it reviews memories of genocide in bodies and in societies as well as genocide in memory through lives, mental health and transgenerational effects. The book also examines the ways genocide has affected artistic works. From poetry to film, photography to theatre, it explores a range of artistic approaches to help demonstrate the heterogeneity of representations. This book provides a comprehensive and wide-ranging assessment of the many ways genocide has been remembered and represented. Itpresents an ideal foundation for understanding genocide and possibly preventing it from occurring again.
With big data and predictive analytics, fortune telling has become a new service product. Aside from business and ‘security’, ‘health’ is the main promise that drives data-based predictions. Individual predictions, however, inevitably remain probabilistic. Personal data can only be interpreted in the light of statistics. At the same time, reference to the genome implies that the predictions shed light on the invisible truth about one’s self. They seem to reveal an undetected ‘identity’. Hence, as Kate O’Riordan’s story shows, the genome entangles us in peculiar contradictions: It promises knowledge and predicts uncertain futures; it facilitates verdicts and calls for self-optimization; it is a statistical construct and claims to be personal.
Digitale Gesundheitskompetenz diskutiert.
The EU Directive on Restructuring and Insolvency (EU 2019/1023)1 requires Member
States to have an early warning system to allow companies in financial distress to detect distress early (enough) to engage in a restructuring, thereby avoiding insolvency. With the absence of a common model at Member State level, this paper analyses the opportunities for artificial intelligence / machine learning-based methods at a corporate level. It is in a company’s interest to implement a system that will alert the management to the need to take action and prevent a distress situation.
The introduction sets the scene while part two discusses the theoretical framework of artificial intelligence / machine learning-based methods and distinguishes between artificial intelligence / machine learning and prediction models. Part three refers to the goal of the EU Directive on Restructuring and Insolvency for Member States to provide alert mechanisms for companies through financial distress prediction models. In Part four, the opportunities and obstacles are investigated through an empirical study with qualitative data, collected from German experts on the current status of (German) companies with respect to implementing artificial intelligence / machine learning as an early warning tool. The study finds that companies see opportunities for using artificial intelligence / machine learning-based methods as early warning tools. The conclusion summarises that there are obstacles to overcome in order to identify financial irregularities and to provide indications for future action to avoid or prevent financial distress.
This article examines the willingness of consumers in Germany to purchase unpackaged food products. A two-step approach was used to determine and analyze factors potentially influencing the purchase intention: a focus group was asked about aspects and motives for purchasing intentions as a qualitative method. Starting with this research, hypotheses were derived based on the gained insights as well as the theory of planned behavior (TPB). Thus, an explanatory model was set up. To test our hypotheses, a data set of 1,894 persons was generated using an online survey. The study integrates various perspectives on unpackaged food from the consumers’ point of view, such as ethical and egoistic motives for buying in relation to attitude, subjective norm as well as limitations of personal and external resources and explains their effects on the intention to buy. Since consumer decisions play a key role in product success in the food industry, the results of the study support existing marketing strategies and allow new approaches to address potential customers within this special market.
